Review of Harmful Algal Blooms in the Coastal Mediterranean Sea, with a Focus on Greek Waters

چکیده
Anthropogenic marine eutrophication has been recognized as one of the major threats to aquatic ecosystem health. In recent years, phenomena, prompted by global warming and population increase, have stimulated proliferation potentially harmful algal taxa resulting in prevalence frequent intense blooms (HABs) coastal areas. Numerous areas Mediterranean Sea (MS) are under environmental pressures arising from human activities that driving degradation increase supply nutrient inputs. this review, we aim present situation regarding appearance HABs linked anthropogenic eutrophication, highlight features particularities MS, summarize phytoplankton outbreaks along length many localities. Furthermore, focus on documented Greek according causative species, period occurrence, induced damage The occurrence eutrophication-induced HAB incidents during past two decades is emphasized.

A Review on Toxic and Harmful Algae in Greek Coastal Waters (E. Mediterranean Sea)
The Greek coastal waters are subjected to harmful algal bloom (HAB) phenomena due to the occurrence of species characterized as toxic (TX), potentially toxic (PT), and non-toxic, high biomass (HB) producers causing harm at multiple levels. The total number of (TX), (PT) and (HB) algae reported in this work are 61, but only 16 species have been associated with the occurrence of important HABs ca...
متن کاملHarmful algal blooms in western Canadian coastal waters
British Columbia (B.C.), the Pacific province of Canada, has one of the longest documented histories of the severest form of harmful algal blooms, paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), along its entire 27,000 km coastline. The first documented case was in 1793 when four of Capt. George Vancouver’s survey crew became ill after a meal of mussels while charting the central coast (Mussel Inlet, orig...
متن کاملAn Overview on the Occurrences of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and Mitigation Strategies in Korean Coastal Waters
Recent wide spread and persistent harmful algal blooms (HABs) give severe impacts on public health and fisheries economics along all coasts of Korea. As the HABs have become more widespread and caused increasing fisheries damage, Korea established an integrated monitoring system included oceanographic, environmental, and red tides observations. Both oceanographic and environmental data and remo...
متن کاملModels of Harmful Algal Blooms
Models used to study harmful algal blooms are a subset of those used to examine more general planktonic processes. Most models have been heuristic, examining the likelihood of certain processes generating a harmful algal bloom. Several models have been more closely coupled to field data and have been used to gain insights into the dynamics underlying the observations. As better physical and bio...
